Orange Man - the project
In 2004, on my way to capture my best friend's wedding in Arkansas (USA) onto photographs, I found myself in Iceland for about ten days. In that short time, I fell in Love with the island and decided that one day I would return with more time on my hands.
Coming back from my trip I met Walter with whom I stayed in contact over the following eight months.
Towards the beginning on 2005, we decided that we would love to return to Iceland and then possibly continue on a longer journey that would have taken us all the way down to South Africa. The sudden project we put together did not however have enough time to pull in substantial amounts of sponsors and hence we decided we would make our way up North and see what next from there on.
Having received a Nikon D70 from an online Finnish photo-bank, I spent the two months in Iceland taking thousands of pictures, writing and writing...
As I came back from Iceland the first time in 2004, I quickly realized that although people really appreciated the pictures I had taken there, nobody seemed to understand the sheer hugeness of everything. On our trip back to Iceland in the summer of 2005 I decided to try and remedy to that. In the beginning I looked for things that people could compare the landscape to, yet found out that it didn't quite work: just another angle with nothing man-made doesn't give much of a size-measure to landscapes.
As we walked on one of our numerous hikes across the vast lands I took a picture of Walter in his bright orange jacket and noticed that it not only allowed one to have a strong grasp over the size of whatever pictured, but also added a touch of humor at times and humbleness at others.
What started as a joke, more than anything, quickly developed into a series of pictures incorporating Walter in various places, sometimes serving as a measure and at other times as the main focus of the picture.
I gathered a sample of the photographs, which I then formatted for web-view and published on my website. After receiving mind-blowing feedback on the series and to launch our common website design.lu, together with my sister Erika and my mother Lisa we decided to open an exhibition with as title The Orange Man visits Iceland.
The exhibition will take place at the Undergrung gallery in Luxembourg, from the 14th of July until the 30th of August 2006. The space will be designed by Lisa and all art-work and flyers are by Erika. My part in the exhibition consists of exposing a small selection of the pictures you may see here. These will be printed onto wooden framed light boxes to allow the pictures to shine through and bring out the truly amazing colors of Iceland.
